The new 2015 Durban City Marathon takes place on March 1 and offers runners and walkers the chance to experience the city in a way they have never seen before. There is a full double lap 42,2km marathon as well as a 10km race. The total prize purse is worth more than R 740 000 with a R 100 000 first prize for the winning man and woman.
Route coordinator Mike Rook confirmed that they have tried to design a course for speed and what they achieved is a course that will not only be fast but scenic. The course announced at the media briefing on Thursday is said to run through the heart of the city, promenade, and harbour and Point area. If fact Rook said “We certainly believe that a new SA record and first sub-2 hr 10 min time in over two decades on the South African soil can be achieved on this course.”
KZNA President Sello Mokoena announced that 2012 Boston Marathon champion, Wako Erkeso will be in attendance. While Olympians David Barmasai Tumo, Mingistu Nebsi, Daniel Derese will all be participating. The event also offers aspirant Two Oceans and Comrades runners the opportunity to best run a qualifying times. Therefore, entries will be capped at 2 000 runners for the 42.2 Km and 1,500 for the 10 km event.
Entries can be completed online at www.durbancitymarathon.co.za, and close on 24 February 2015 while manual entries can be dropped off at the offices of KZN Athletics at Kings Park Athletics Stadium before 27 February 2015. Entries for the marathon cost R 120, while the 10 km is R 50 with an additional R 10 for a temporary licence.
