Free State Stars FC confirmed news of the passing of striker Richard Henyekane via a statement on their website this morning. Saying that Henyekane had passed away by way of tragic motor vehicle accident in the early hours of this morning.
A club representative further confirmed on the SABC’s Motsweding FM’ breakfast show “Ragoga gee”, that Henyekane was travelling with four other passengers, who are also late and yet to be identified, when he got involved in a head on collision with an on-coming truck.
“We wish to say to the Henyekane family that they must know that we are with them at all times, and trust that they will put all their sorrows in the hands of God the Almighty in this hard period.” reads a statement on the club’s official website
South African football has lost yet another one of our promising players, a product of Kimberley’s Galeshewe township.
The former Bafana Bafana international earned nine caps, and also played for Mamelodi Sundowns after he was discovered by Golden Arrows. Henyekane who played as a striker or attacking right wing position had his career best season with Golden Arrows in the PSL. The striker bagged three hat-tricks during the 2009-10 PSL season ending with 19 league goals, as well as a further Telkom Knockout hat-trick, finishing with 23 goals for the season
His brother Joseph Henyekane who was also a professional football player passed away in December last year at the age of 30, having also been on the books of Arrows, as well as Mpumalanga Black Aces and Bidvest Wits.
