Daine Klate chats about the loss to Sundowns

After a pulsating match of end to end stuff in which Mamelodi Sundowns managed a 4-2 win over Bidvest Wits FC at Lucas Morioe Stadium on Saturday. Obzeva.co.za caught up with the most decorated player in PSL history, Daine Klate to find out his thoughts about the loss.

Q: Dane hard luck about the result, but how would you rate your performance here today?

DK7: Jah, obviously a good team performance for us. Eh, I thought, ehr…the result is probably not a true reflection of the game. We hit the cross bar, we had so many chances, but if we don’t stick them away at the end we are gonna be punished. Especially against the quality like Sundowns, you know? But all in all we gave it a good go, a good effort. It was a nice open game. You know if you compare the chances between the two teams, we defentaly had more chances.

Q: What do you think this game tells us going forward in the league?

DK7: Ja, obviously it was a bad result for us, away from home still. We lost against a decent side, so can’t read too much into that. The season is still very very young, you know still a lot of games to go. So we have to pick ourselves up and try again on Wednesday at home. You know when you play at home you have to get the tree points at all costs. We would have probably been happy if the score had ended 1-1, you know away from home against a quality team like Sundowns. But all in all we have to pick ourselves up now and move forward.

Q: Happy with the brace?

DK7: Ja, obviously for myself personally. But if you end up losing, there is no joy in it. You wanna, score and you want the team to win. But ja, my confidence is good and going foward I hope I can add more value to the team and score more goals.

Q: Take us through that attacking three, it’s you Pelembe and sometimes Vila and Botes as well. You guys look good going forward.

DK7: Ja absolutely, I think we have good quality in the team. You know with Pelembe and Henrico, with Vilakazi back there, I think we have a very very good team going forward. You know erh, but conceding four goals today was a bit of a bummer for us. But I think we have to regroup and obviously going forward we have to score more goals. Like I was saying, all the chances we created, if we took our chances in the first half, we could have probably ended up winning the game.

Q: And with the league title, looking at the squad that you have at Wits, very experienced players as well. Do you think you have what it takes to mount a serious challenge this season?

DK7: Ja, we wanna compete. We’re not saying that we are going to win the league. We just wanna compete, but we have strong team.  We just have to take it one game at a time. If we can be amongst the top two or top three at the end of the season with five games to go, we are in with a chance. I would like to think that’s the aim you know, that with five game left we are able to compete for it.

Q: Obviously, this is not a fair question to you. Feel free not to answer if you don’t want to answer it. Do you maybe think had Vila started the game, maybe things would have been different.

DK7:  Nah, I think any eleven that put out there is capable. You know every team that the coach puts out there has to do the job, there is no excuses. We can’t say this one was not there, this one was not there. If we have injuries it’s the same thing you know. It is the same like having injuries. Every eleven that goes out there, the coach has confidence in them, and we have to do the job

Q: On the bright side, second leg of the MTN 8, I am sure you take a lot of positives from this game?

DK7:  Ja, obviously we have first look at the Maritzburg game. We can’t think about the second leg first. But obviously that’s in the back of our minds. But I think we are fully focused on getting the three points against Maritzburg on Wednesday and then we can see about the second leg against Ajax.

Thank you for your time.
