MTN 8 Final a look at history

MTN 8 Final a look at history

The second MTN8 Final between Cape Town City and Super Sport United in as many years is behind us. And the history books will have had to be altered. Here are some of the few epoch making facts that you might not be aware of regarding this final.

Incidentally both coaches are protégés of Bidvest Wits mentor Gavin Hunt, who just happens to be the coach with the longest stint of unbroken service in the Premiership. Hunt signed Benni Mcarthy when he was in charge of Seven Stars back in the late 90’s. And then chose for Kaitano Tembo as assistant coaching after the departure of the now late Thomas Madigage at Supersport United. Both coaches stood the chance to win as a player and as a coach. Bearing in mind that Tembo won as an assistant last season alongside Eric Tinkler as United head coach.

It is also interesting to note that as Kaitano Tembo won as the SAA 8 in 2004. He might very well be the first player to captain a side to Top 8 victory and then win it as coach in the PSL era. While after winning the cup with Orlando Pirates in 2011 – 12, Bennie Mcarthy, became the first man to win MTN8 as coach and as player since the establishment of the PSL.

Supersport United became the 3rd Pretoria club to win top 8 in 2017 after Arcadia Shepard who were the first to win 1986; and Mamelodi Sundowns (1988, 1990 & 2007). When SuperSport United won in 2017 they were ending a 10 Year top 8 drought in the nation’s capital.

Orlando Pirates hold the record for most top 8 defences since 1972 (3 – 1972 & 1973, 1996 & 2000, then 2010 & 2011). While Kaizer Chiefs has only done it twice (1976 & 1977, 1991 & 1992). Had United managed to win the MTN Top 8 they would have become the 1st club based outside Johannesburg to defend a Top 8 since 1972.

Furthermore, had United managed to defeat Cape Town City, then Reneilwe Letsholonyane would have been the first man to win it MTN 8  for the fourth time in his career.  However not many people know that with Cape Town City winning Teko Modise won his 2nd MTN 8 medal for the 2nd time. His first was with Orlando Pirates in 2010. In that match too he didn’t play but he was on the bench.

Cape Town City is the 3rd ever club to win Top 8 after Ajax Cape Town in 2015. Ajax was the second club from CT to win this cup since 1972, after Santos in 2002.
